Some of the best, truly outside guitar stuff is tediously hypnotic—something Ducret will never be accused of. His ultra-percussive style on the opening cut even upstages Hendrix’s attempts at spitfire on the latter’s “Machine Gun.” The guitarist flashes snippets of blues and rock in the midst of his outlandish improvisations, never quite fully spelling out the cliches but letting listeners know where his pre-weird roots lie. In fact, “Old Brown Shoe” is the George Harrison cut twisted into schizoid fret-whacking that must resemble what goes on in the heads of all those Beatles-influenced psychopaths who’ve turned the bands White Album into a cryptic, Newer Testament. More adventurous than Fred Frith, more accessible than Joe Morris, Ducret whips off flashy textures (the title cut being a perfect example) as engaging as any soloing by more conventional players. This guy’s worth a lot more attention than he gets. (Dave McElfresh in Cadence Magazine)
