John Shiurba writes in the SF Bay Guardian: “This CD pairs two important works by hometown improv heroes Rova Sax Quartet. “Maintaining the Web Under Less Than Obvious Circumstances” is a collective improvisation based on a very elaborate system of hand cues and color-coded flags and fans, inspired by the musicians’ work with John Zorn. It’s a testimony to both the effectiveness of the cues and the unwavering sensitivity of the four improvisers that the piece seems to evolve as an organic composition. “Grace” is probably the most gorgeous piece Rova has ever recorded. The wistful recurring theme is interpolated into excruciatingly delicate improvised passages in which the sounds hover on the brink of silence, invoking the spirit of Morton Feldman.”
ARTISTS
Larry Ochs (tenor and sopranino saxophones); Jon Raskin (baritone and alto saxophones); Steve Adams (alto, sopranino and baritone saxophones); Bruce Ackley (soprano and tenor saxophones)
