His first exposure to the blues came from sitting on his porch and listening to Scott Dunbar play the stripped down country blues. But it wasn't long before the impressionable young man caught wind of folks such as John Lee Hooker and Muddy Waters, resulting in his desire to plug in and play like the big boys. Robert Cage eventually wound up playing in the house band of a local club that bordered the Mississippi/Louisiana state line. When the place burnt down, Cage decided to form the Impalas, a cover band whose struggles extended far beyond the usual strains of a burgeoning band. By the time the band dissolved Cage had lost half of his 200 pounds, a brutal side effect to his epic whisky consumption. By 1970 Cage married, leaving the musician life behind and taking a job as a diesel mechanic. But the blues never left his soul. He continued to play parties as a soloist and reverted back to the style that he learned from Dunbar.
