Serenade for a Widow |
Bob's Gallery |
 |
| robably my favorite Breuker Kollektief CD of the moment. While the title tune (illustrated by a Gary Larson cartoon on the cover - a perfect visual simile for Breuker's music!) is the major work here at 24 minutes and raucously avant-sounding, the other nine tracks alternate between fascinating originals and perfectly-straight faced modern versions of such dated tunes as the flapper-era vocal on Remarkable Girl, and the opening and closing different versions of Reginald Foresythe's urbane Serenade for a Wealthy Widow. But the best thing has to be the ten-minute track titled Minimal, which gently parodies Philip Glass' Koyaanisqatsi score while taking it in several interesting new directions that Glass never thought of. |
ARTISTS Willem Breuker (soprano, tenor alto sax, clarinet, vocal); Andre Goudbeek (alto sax); Peter Barkema (tenor sax); Andy Altenfelder (trumpet); Chris Abelen (trombone); Bernard Hunnekink (trombone, tuba); Henk de Jonge (piano, synthesizer); Arjen Gorter (bass); Rob Verdurmen (percussion, xylophone) |
TRACKS Serenade for a wealthy Widow (R. Foresythe), Bob's Gallery, Morribreuk, Jazz II (W. Breuker), I Don't Love You (K. Weill/ M. Magre), Minimal (W. Breuker), Remarkable Girl (Creamer/ Handman), Living Apart Together (LAT) right now (W. Breuker), La Santa Espina (trad) |
