| DAVID LIEBMAN had a very distinguished quintet in 1979 and 1980. It was this quintet that toured Europe and it was Timeless that recorded this quintet. Well done, because the music of this group was most vital and a tenor sax feature like 'Autumn In New York' belongs to the highlights in Liebman's recording career.
At first David Liebman played clarinet, then tenor sax and flute and later on, when he was playing in a rock-group, the soprano sax became his most favourite instrument. Liebman started with rebellious music played in New York lofts: "It was just 'play and burn' in those days, no finesse, no subtleties, technique was not the story at at time." He studied with Joe Allard (1962-1966), Charles Lloyd (1966-1968) and Lennie Tnstano (1967-1968). He played with the rock-group Ten Wheel Drive (1970), Elvin Jones (1971 -1973),Miles Davis (1973-1974) and formed his own group 'Lockout Farm' in April 1974. It was this group that blended Be Bop and Coltrane's style of playing with the traditional elements of Indian music. Liebman played a fusion of jazz and funk with Pee Wee Ellis (1976), toured with Chick Corea (1977) and with his quintet (1978-1980). In 1980 his group Quest was Bop orientated again. David Liebman is not only playing and touring, he is also very active in jazz education. The man with the lyrical sound can say 'thanks' to people like John Coltrane, Miles Davis, Sonny Rollins, McCoy Tyner and Elvin Jones, but at the same time he has enough individual qualities to stand on his own, like he did in this recording. |
