Welcome To Love is an invitation to enjoy music in its highest form, as the expression of the purest and most potent of all human emotions. Love has inspired countless words from poets to philosophers but none have expounded more eloquently on the subject than musicians.
If music be the language of love, jazz is the most romantic dialect and the tenor saxophone its most passionate voice. Since Coleman Hawkins created his famous tenor solo on Body And Soul the sound of the instrument has remained synonomous with romance. Lester Young, Ben Webster, Dexter Gordon and Sonny Rollins, all proved themselves seductive serenades as part of their mastery. And when the anguish of the sixties threatened to displace this important aspect of jazz, John Coltrane reaffirmed the beauty of the music with Ballads.
Pharoah Sanders has been a leading voice of love through music since he first started recording more than twenty-five years ago. Pharoah began his liner notes to his own first album with the words If we can learn to love, and through the years he has preached its message consistently with titles and lyrics like Light Of Love, The Power Of Love, Love Will Find A Way, and 'You've Got To Have Peace And Love'. And although the love his music invokes is generally more religious than romantic he approaches the secular songs on this disc with the same reverence and spirit.
The spirit that inspires this reverence is of course John Coltrane. Almost all of the compositions here have been recorded by the great master and Pharoah's reading of them are pretty much faithful renderings of those classic melodies. Arid while the similarities between the two great saxophonists' sound and style have brought Sanders as much criticism as adulation, those listeners with more sensitive music palates will note the evergrowing maturity and individuality of Pharoah's own personal voice (most evident here on lament' and 'The Bird Song', the two songs on the disc Trane did not record). To those who wish to remain critical I remind that the respect, admiration and influence between the two musicians was mutual and point out the words of Emile de Girardin which begin these notes. In singing those songs of love which remind us of his departed friend, Pharoah rekindles our spirits with that fire from heaven. During these times so full of strife and hate here on earth it is indeed a warmth most welcome. - Russ Musto
