| This fascinating, two-CD collection features several Italian groups led by percussionist Tiziano Tononi and saxophonist Daniele Cavallanti. The first disk features the two leading a quartet and octet, playing two pieces by Ornette Coleman, one by John Coltrane, three by Cavalanti, and one by Tononi. The second disc is a suite by Tononi, and is bolstered by the presence of Gianluigi Trovesi on alto clarinet and alto sax. Through the years, Nexus has attracted different players, the common denominator being the two leaders. The tunes incorporate a wide array of styles, ranging from free-style solos to Mingus-type collective improvisation to fairly straight forward bop voicings. While there is an occasional loss of focus, there is enough outstanding soloing and strong arranging to make this a worthwhile purchase.
