| From the Pacific edge of Canada come two of the brightest lights on the new music/improv/jazz scene. Both are members of N.O.W. Orchestra and Talking Pictures and they have worked with Barry Guy, Rene Lussier, Vinny Golia, Georg Graewe and Francois Houle. On this CD they are two musicians playing as one. Hand-in-glove (or rather, foot-in-shoe), Lee and van der Schyff serve up 18 to-the-point improvisations. More earth than air, more space than sparse. The improvisations here are sensitive and imaginative, and if, as Chris Speed recently remarked, great improvisation is defined more by the listening that goes on between players than by their in-the-bag repertoire, then here we have some great improvisation. |
