| The Whaling City Sound Record Label proudly presents The John Allmark Jazz Orchestra featuring Clay Osborne. This is big band jazz at its finest when these two dynamic forces come together. Recorded live at the Bovi Town Tavern in Providence, Rhode Island, John Allmark and company render a sound that is both vibrant and enthusiastic. As a trumpet player, John has been putting his band together for six plus years, and has also featured some of the finest names in jazz from the greater New England and New York area. Collectively, the music passionately displays some intensely profound brass and saxophone sections. Also up for the offering is vocalese rendered by Clay Osborne, who just happens to be the brother of R&B singer Jeffrey Osborne.
Although Clay is more or less a mainstream singer, his collaboration with John Allmark is not just another voice in front of a band. Overall, Osborne's singing style meshes well with John Allmark's Orchestra. He and the band do play well together, and the singer's contributions are significant and memorable. In other words, Clay's voice does not get lost in the action-packed adventure of instrumental accompaniment, and his melodic phrasings are one of his strongest attributes. Jazz singing has become a lost art over the years, but Osborne continues the tradition set by Bobby Short, Billy Eckstein and Joe Williams. In modern day jazz, vocals are hard to come by, but this is an opportunity to get re-acquainted. Especially when big band and jazz singing come together as one. -Sheldon Nunn, JazzReview.com |
