| Antonio Zambrini hails from the deep Italian tradition of the mainstream piano trio, much of which has been documented on the remarkable Splasc(h) record label. As with many other releases on this label, all the compositions are originals, and if none of them mines new ground, the performances nonetheless exude honesty, competence, and occasionally passion. At its heart, this is simple music, melodies that can be followed but are unlikely to be remembered; long improvised lines followed by light, short groups of notes that walk rather than run; and a dynamic level that never expands greatly. Zambrini and his colleagues swing gently, like a mist on a cool morning. They are understated in their gentleness, and to the extent that they fail to ignite they might be faulted. But, the intent is not to excite, not to ignite, and certainly not to challenge or alarm. Rather, there is a lilting softness; a sweetness that never devolves to pure sentimentality. Let there be no mistake — this is far removed from new age and its descendants. It is lovely fare, yes, but it contains the elements of jazz: syncopation, creative improvisation, and swing. The peaks and valleys may be smoothed out, but they are there. |
