La Chine Africaine
Devotee
Echo
Devotee (AIR 0030) features songs, poetry, and music inspired by the Chinese diaspora and Genny Lim's own pilgrimage to India. Drawing upon many musical cultures, including traditional Chinese, African, Indian, and jazz music, Devotee is a powerful and moving work that reflects the many influences that make up the musical and personal identities of these artists.
Devotee features works that reflect the experiences that arose from the travels of Chinese and Chinese Americans. The five-part suite, "La Chine Africaine" was created to reflect the experiences of Francis Wong's mother, Noela Maria Wong, who grew up in Mauritius, 1000 miles off the coast of South Africa. The title of this piece is also a metaphor for the complexity of cultural identity that is a sign of our times. Other works on the album, such as "Moon Over the Ganges" came out of Ms. Lim's experiences during her holy pilgrimage to India.. |
