| Live At Grasland finds Burton Greene at the piano before a studio audience at Grasland Studios in Haarlem, The Netherlands. In one of his most expansive recordings yet, Burton selected pieces that allowed him to breathe in and out, both very structured, focused pieces that collect energy with their specific rhythms and forms, and looser, freer pieces that allow him to expand.
As one of the wildest free jazz players in the heady days of free jazz in the 1960s, Burton Greene has taken a long musical journey over the past 40 years. As he says, "In the 60s we were playing atomic energy music, we exploded like the Fourth of July and a lot of people couldn't put the pieces back. In the 70s and 80s I had to find a way to balance that out. I wanted to make a balm instead of a bomb. Now I can go far out and then come right back in. Playing free for me means I'm free to play Mozart too."
The recording quality is excellent, capturing all of the nuance and tonal sensitivity that only a master pianist and composer like Burton Greene can bring to the instrument. This is the first complete recording of his classic "South Florida Odyssey Suite" as well as his first solo recording of Perry Robinson's beautiful ballad, "Angels." Take a journey with Burton Greene on this recording and your life will be measurably richer for the experience.
