| A fine, eclectic jazz recording with an edge; this is guitarist Christy Doran's creative jazz quartet, 'New Bag'. The set opens with a beautiful incantational title composition, 'Confusing the Spirits', featuring the lush singing of Bruno Amstad. The mood quickly shifts with the jet propelled 'Paros', which immediately follows, featuring simple ostinati, throaty singing and rapid fire guitar solos. This second composition subsequently slows into a quiet, textural environment of sustained guitar gestures, to move into a beautiful vocal song, similar to that which opened the CD. The recording alternates between textural and rhythmic music, bel canto and throaty singing, often side-by-side, unified with a Brazilian feel, and a jazz-rock rhythmic drive. 'Shorter Cuts' opens featuring the fine rhythm section. Compositions include 'Confusing the Spirits', 'paros', 'A Czech in Lagos', 'Oil', 'Big Bag Ballad', 'One One One', 'sShorter Cuts', and Space The Place'. |
