| Falling Water, Live at Mãe de Água continues Drimala Records’ ongoing exploration of the art of the duet. Recorded at Lisbon’s famed acoustically remarkable 18th century Águas Livres Aqueduct with its nine seconds of acoustic natural reverb and continuous water drone, only the bravest of musicians dare perform here. But Joe and Carlos were more than up to the challenge. Performing at a specially arranged concert to bring these two masters together, they used the room’s natural acoustic delay and continuous water drone as a third and fourth member of the unit to create a music fantastic in its openness and richly woven texture. Melding the often disparate musical heritages of a studied modern European richness with an easy American blues swing through a universal language of composing in the moment, Joe and Carlos create 50 minutes of transcendental bliss, or as one critic wrote after attending the recording, “like music you have never heard.”
All About Jazz New York wrote of Joe Giardullo’s music, “prepare to be transported” whereas the All Music Guide, put it more succinctly, “startlingly impressive,” and he does not disappoint with his newest release on Drimala Records. Long respected for his work with luminaries like Joe McPhee, Marilyn Crispell, Milford Graves, and Steve Lacy, Joe Giardullo is now widely recognized for his own voice. Likewise, Carlos Zingaro does not disappoint with his immediately recognizable approach to the violin and improvisation “in the European way.” This record will go a long way towards introducing both musicians to wider audiences on both sides of the Atlantic. |
