| Featuring Ray Anderson on trombone, Mark Helias on contrabass and Barry Altschul on drums & percussion. Excellent and challenging studio date from January of 1980 from one of the most creative drummers of new music/avant-jazz and percussionist of choice for Paul Bley, Anthony Braxton and Sam Rivers. Sackville reissues released in limited editions of 1,000
This limited edition reissue features the brilliant trombone work of Ray Anderson, the bass of Mark Helias & the percussion skills of Barry Altschul. The trio had worked together extensively by the time they recorded this album. The cohesion between the instruments & the fluid interaction with which they develop & expand their ideas is remarkable. This recording captures the high level of creativity flowing from the music. It was recorded more than 20 years ago, but it has retained its freshness, vigour & wit. Review: The Wire (10/02, p.71) - "...Percussionist Barry Altschul is a great musical thinker whose commitment to improv began early....BRAHMA is especially welcome..." Down Beat (4/02, p.69) - 4 stars out of 5 - "...A wonderful document of the drummer near the end of his finest period...delightful writing, powerful voices and tremendous energy..." |
