This big band tribute to the late Roland Kirk is a long overdue acknowledgment of one of the true originators in the jazz continuum. The fact that it was done -- and well -- in Italy is a sore point, but let's deal with the music at hand. Guitarist Carlo Ceriani -- with a diverse cast of Italy's finest that includes Bruno Marini in the saxophone section, drummer Riccardo Biancoli, and flutist Stefano Benini, and that numbers 13 as a whole and 15 in places -- takes Kirk's music and gives it a positively Ellingtonian treatment. While it's true there are none of Kirk's rough edges on pieces like "Rip, Rig and Panic" or "Slippery, Hippery, Flippery," there is an elegance about their arrangement that would no doubt have pleased Kirk. Here, the man with three horns is treated like the orchestral and harmonic genius he was as a composer. All of the roots of Ceriani's interpretations and arrangements go back to the blues, no matter how far afield they go in their harmonic attenuations. On "Portrait of Those Beautiful Ladies" the winds and reeds trade places in the melody and in the harmony and move toward a brief dissonant period that highlights just how gorgeously adorned the harmonics in the tune are. On "I Talk With the Spirits/Serenade to a Cuckoo," the band takes Kirk's flute masterpiece and turns it into an anthem of sweetness and light, a swinging meditation piece. In all this is a lovely recording that offers a loving and revealing view of an artist whose seemingly rough edges may have blinded others to his massively important contributions to jazz.
