John Korsrud is a composer, trumpet player and bandleader. One of Canada's busier composers, John has been commissioned by The Vancouver Symphony Orchestra, The CBC Radio Orchestra, The Albany Symphonys New Music Festival, Vancouver New Music, The Standing Wave Ensemble and several Dutch ensembles such as LOOS, Combustion Chamber and De Ereprijs. John has created numerous evening long dance scores for choreographers such as Lola McLaughlin, Kokoro Dance, Chick Snipper, Battery Opera, Joe Laughlin, and Karen Jamieson. Johns score for the 2002 documentary "Heroines" earned him a Leo and Golden Sheaf Award and a Juno Nomination.
John studied composition with Louis Andriessen at the Royal Conservatory of Music in The Netherlands from 1995-1997, was a frequent participant at the Banff Centre for the Arts between 1984 and 1994 and graduated from The University of British Columbia in 1990. In 2001, he was awarded The Canada Councils Joseph S. Stauffer Prize for Music, Literature and Visual Arts and in 2003, was awarded a fellowship to the Civitella Ranieri Foundation in Umbria, Italy.
John also leads the 17-piece jazz/ new music Hard Rubber Orchestra an ensemble formed in 1990. This ensemble has released two CDs and has toured to Europe and across Canada. |
