| A strong set reissued from LP, Rainsplash features the accomplished piano of Alan Simon, with tenor saxophonist Ralph Lalama on tenor, John Goldsby on bass, and Tim Pleasant on drums. Simon plays with assurance, his notes tinged with an impressionistic imprimatur. He is comfortable with a range of tempos, and his pleasant brand of relaxed swing delights as it edifies. His coupling of Debussy's "Reflet's Dans Leau" with Strayhorn's "Lush Life" is brilliant. Other pieces include two originals by Simon, and tunes by Herbie Hancock, Duke Ellington, and Wayne Shorter — a generous program. At the time of this recording, Lalama's career had not yet taken off, and he shows the promise that he was to largely fulfill, with a commanding presence on his horn. This confident, swinging set is a fine example of the post-bop genre, and should reward the serious listener. |
