| The opening track of 1985's CHILDREN, "David-Mingus," may startle long-time David Murray aficionados with its commencing cacophonous and throaty growl from the electric guitar of none other than James Blood Ulmer. However the next track, "Death," takes a very different approach; Murray wails and moans on the clarinet in a moody, sparse conversation with Lonnie Plaxico's bowed bass. This is followed by another classic ballad, "All the Things You Are," which features the great Don Pullen on piano. Rounding off this diverse set is "Tension," a high energy number featuring a trio of Murray, Pullen and the great drummer Marvin "Smitty" Smith. CHILDREN embodies the adventurous spirit of Murray's octet work of this period in a smaller group setting. |
