| This is a mighty fine all-star quartet, made even better by the great material that Gerry has provided for them. What is also great is that each piece has a sly groove that will keep us all smiling as we listen and even dance around at times. I dig how the groove is constantly in motion, shifting in dynamics, speeding up and slowing down within each piece. The bassist (Helias) and drummer have played together on occasion and work well at nailing down the lines, whether swinging or getting into a fine funky mode. They always seem to be playing around with the rhythm. Gerry sounds like he is playing on a balafon (an African xylophone) on "The Current Underneath", the exquisite melody is especially enchanting. Herb, who is often known more for his fireworks display on trumpets, plays one of the most laid back and lovely solos I've heard from him on flugelhorn. We don't get to hear Helias playing his electric bass very often, which seems odd, since he sounds so fine on it on a few of these tracks. The title track sounds like one of those great Weather Report funky tunes that might have appeared on "Sweetnighter", with some fine slapping on that bass throughout. On a few of these songs, one horn will solo quickly as the other horn plays slower harmonies underneath, eventually swirling around other another tightly and most creatively. One of the year's most auspicious delights. |
