Hailing from the Netherlands and led by altoist and composer Paul Termos, the debut recording from the tentet is comprised of pieces dating back to 1988. Featuring stellar talent — including trombonist Walter Wierbos, trumpeter Eric Boeren, bassist Ernst Glerum, drummer Michael Vatcher, tenorman Peter Van Bergen, vocalist Jodi Gilbert — the band was created by Termos to explore his own fascinations with the checks ands balances of creating pieces for a large ensemble. The eight pieces here explore some idea of how improvisational, compositional, and aleatoric elements are combined in a work and to what ends they serve. "La La La I & II" are game pieces with very specific instructions given to the entire band. There are also completely "free" sounding works, where the entire creation of a work is based on the intersecting nexus of all the players engaged in spontaneous composition such as the title track, which is one of the most perfectly balanced improv pieces ever recorded. Everything isn't in its place, but the harmonic elements and polytonal exchange between the saxophones and percussion instruments (piano, drums, vibes), which in turn engage the brass and bass, is nothing short of remarkable. How they keep it all together and moving forward is mind-boggling. And then there are works which are built around the idea of a composed score with a dramatic element of improvisation in one section that turns the piece into something else, a before and after view. Throughout there is great warmth, humor and vision on the part of both composer and instrumentalists. In places carnival and circus music are juxtaposed free jazz and then ballroom swing and finally hard bop with a harmonic invention that erects and collapses itself as a first foundational precept to something else that's never articulated. The entire process in these pieces is meta-musical; in other words, music about music. Could there be anything better?
