Broadway Two Step |

Voted among the Top 40 Releases of 1998 by Tone Clusters Magazine
This CD's title refers to the fact that the set utilizes a quintet comprised of the Joseph Scianni Trio (pianist Scianni, bassist Dominic Duval and drummer Jay Rosen) plus the Mark Whitecage 4tet (Whitecage on alto and soprano, cellist Tomas Ulrich, Duval and Rosen). The music mostly consists of fairly free and intense improvising with some quieter moments included for variety. The colorful songtitles include "Office People," "Dangerous Neighborhood," "Moonlight and Martinis" and "Broadway Two Step." This music will take several listens to fully appreciate, but due to the high musicianship and logical (if very advanced) soloing, it is worth the effort. AMG
"The listening rewards are great as the group plays without a net, just their genius and musical sensibilities supporting them." - AFIM music MIX
"It's a very fine group that creates shifting textures and rich, if transient, harmonic invention...Often the music is a dance of shifting identities, a fluid field that touches on much of the past, whether classical or Jazz... Scianni is more likely to echo older forms, to lend structure to melody, while Whitecage's lines seem often to be all floating fluency. Ulrich's ability to craft concordance among different voices - to suggest another reed or mingle his chords with the piano's or create string storms with Duval - stands out even among these players, while Duval and Rosen range from rhythm section roles to joining fully in the contrapuntal sweep that carries this music along... highly recommended" - Stuart Broomer, Cadence
"Whitecage and Scianni honor the integrity of improvisation while allowing the fancifully irrepressible and the humorous the most mileage. They and their cohorts apply technique to depiction... The reedist and pianist can lead this shifting quintet through this approach by virtue of five decades of experience, and as muralists of sorts they revel equally in the expressionistic and the subtle." - Ron Welburn, Jazz Times
"Mark Whitecage's quartet and Joseph Scianni's trio share the services of Dominic Duval and Jay Rosen; hence the curious album title. The collective five-way group improvisation works because the ensembles listen to each other and work together." - Jim Santella, Jazz News |
