| Rare work from Wes Montgomery -- captured here not just live in Belgium -- but also in London and Hamburg as well! The first 10 tracks on the set are from rare TV show performances from Belgium and London in 1965 -- and feature Wes grooving with his same combo from the famous Paris recordings from the same year -- Harold Mabern on piano, Art Harper on bass, and Jimmy Lovelace on drums. Mabern's presence is especially great, as he gives the tunes a flowing grace that seems to bring out a new spirit in Wes -- and the recordings have a joyously dancing feel that's really wonderful. Titles include "The Boy Next Door", "Impressions", "Twisted Blues", "Here's That Rainy Day", "Jingles", and "Full House". The remaining 4 tracks on the CD are from another 1965 European date -- but one recorded live in Hamburg with a group that includes Martial Solal on piano, Michel Gaudry on bass, and Ronnie Stephenson on drums -- plus a bit of tenor on one track from Johnny Griffin. Solal's piano has a bit of a darker edge than Mabern's here -- and the tracks are noticeably longer, with really free-flowing solos from Wes. Titles include "Here's That Rainy Day", "Twisted Blues", "Blue Monk", and "Four On Six". |
