| 2 great ones by Joe Newman -- back to back on one CD! The first 11 tracks on the CD are from the excellent Soft Swingin Jazz session -- a unique outing that has Joe's trumpet backed by Shirley Scott's organ, and which also features Joe doing a bit of vocalizing himself! The laidback setting on the record is really nice -- an easygoing mode that has Newman relaxing into a groove that's a bit fresher than usual, and which gives him ample space to slide notes around with his characteristic phrasing on trumpet. Other players include Eddie Jones on bass and Charlie Persip on drums -- and titles include "Three Little Words", "Scotty", "The Farmer's Daughter", "Rosetta", and "Save Your Love For Me". Happy Cats is a pretty great little record too -- a bit more tightly arranged, thanks to participation from Ernie Wilkins, Quincy Jones, and Al Cohn -- but in a way that leaps around nicely with the energy implied by the title! Although the album's only a sextet outing, the charts for the horn parts dip and turn with the strength of a much larger group -- as Joe's lead trumpet solos are backed by playful flute work from Frank Wess and trombone by Frank Rehack -- gently gliding along the bottom in a way that really shades in the tunes! The rest of the group features Johnny Acea on piano, Eddie Jones on bass, and Connie Kay on drums -- and titles include "The Happy Cats", "Buttercup", "Robbin's Nest", "Joe's Tune", "I Never Knew", "Later For The Happenings", and "Cocktails For Two". |
