| In 1973, jazz drummer/composer Bob Moses, who'd played and recorded with Rahsaan Roland Kirk, Gary Burton and Pat Metheny, formed his own Mozown label and released the free-jazz symphony BITTERSUITE IN THE OZONE. In the tradition of Don Cherry's awesome ETERNAL RHYTHM and The Art Ensemble of Chicago's FANFARE FOR THE WARRIORS and A JACKSON IN YOUR HOUSE, this is open-ended, questing, spiritual music, with an implicit or explicit rhythmic center.
Free passages featuring the too-little-heard ethereal voice of Jeanne Lee, rich with echoes of African folk music, alternate with darting, arranged ensemble work recalling Gil Evans and Sun Ra. The sprawling 25-minute elegy for a fallen friend, "Stanley Free," has an exquisite solo from the late eponymous pianist, encompassing huge chunks of jazz piano history, from Fats Waller to Thelonious Monk, Bill Evans, and beyond. This piece also features some of Randy Brecker's finest, bravest, most emotive trumpet playing. Other featured musicians are multi-wind player Dave Liebman, drummer Billy Hart, cellist David Eyges, and former Saturday Night Live Band sax/tuba ace Howard Johnson. Though it's not easy going, BITTERSUITE IN THE OZONE is a joyous and moving listen. |
