| A duo recording from 1987, a year that also saw the release of the David Murray Octet discs NEW LIFE and HOPE SCOPE. While in a different vein to his work with the Octet, THE HEALERS is undoubtedly a striking and beautiful album. Murray seems to know intuitively how to collaborate successfully with other musicians, and his work with Randy Weston is as expansive and well orchestrated as his big band and octet material.
Weston peppers his Monk-influenced playing with the upbeat melodies typical of the West Indian and African music. When his piano style is combined with Murray's gospel by way of Albert Ayler's tenor playing, the results are a joy to behold. Longtime Murray aficionados will enjoy THE HEALERS for its sensuous textures and the sublime interaction of these two master musicians.
