|Gentle Breeze is my second CD on
Timeless Records. My first CD, entitled Nighttime Daydreams (SJP 337), was released in 1990.
In addition to myself on guitar, the other musicians on Gentle Breeze are: Alan Kiger, fluegelhorn; Lynn Seaton, bass and John Von Ohlen, drums.
Fluegelhorn artist Alan Kiger and drummer John Von Ohlen also performed on my first Timeless Records release.
Alan Kiger was a member of George Russell's group in the 60's. He has also recorded with pianist John Lewis. I feel that he has a melodic style that is all his own.
Lynn Seaton has emerged as one of the premier bassists in jazz. He has performed with Woody Herman,
Count Basie, Tony Bennett, Monty Alexander and many others. Lynn also has a marvelous CD on Timeless Records, entitled Bassman's Basement (SJP 390), featuring his own trio.
Through his recordings with Woody Herman, Stan Kenton, Marty Paich and the Blue Wisp Big Band, John Von Ohlen has proven to be one of the world's premier big band drummers. This CD shows that he excels in a small group setting, also.
When I was planning this recording I decided that I didn't want to record in the sterile environment of a recording studio. However, I didn't want to record a live engagement with distracting noises such as talking and glasses clinking. So, I decided to record in a jazz club during off hours. Through the generostiy of Margene Wisby, the Blue Wisp Jazz Club was made available to me.
I also must commend recording engineer Michael Graham for his expertise in on-location recording. I am very pleased with the final result.
Since I am featuring a number of my original compositions on this CD, I decided to balance out the program by including a number of familiar standards such as Laura, Stella By Starlight, Alone Together and I Get A Kick Out Of You.
Finally, I would like to thank all the people involved in this project. It was a most enjoyable experience.
Recorded at THE BLUE WISP JAZZ CLUB, CINCINNATI OH, JUNE 1991.
