| Brian Melvin remembers being introduced to jazz early in life by seeing the Buddy Rich big band. 'When I was 8, I received a snare drum and a cymbal for Christmas; I loved it from the start. I soon had records by Miles Davis, John Coltrane, Jimi Hendrix, Cream and the Grateful Dead, but most of my influences came from just playing. I was in many rock and roll bands and by the time I was in 8th or 9th grade, performing at teen clubs dances, I knew that I was going to be a professional musician. That's when I really started studying drums and became very interested in Elvin Jones and Tony Williams. There was so much music in San Francisco where I grew up during that era; I hung out at Keystone Korner every night, seeing the different drummers that came through town.'
In several years, Brian Melvin became a top freelance drummer in San Francisco. Later he spent time living in Copenhagen and Amsterdam before moving to New York, where he led the house band at the Blue Note for eight months. I've been lucky enough to play with some of the greatest musicians including Bob Weir of the Grateful Dead, Archie Shepp, Joe Henderson, pianist Dave Kikoski and guitarist Mike Stern. I've participated in a lot of recordings as sideman overseas and led the two dates for Timeless, but Standards Zone is my best record up to this point. 1m also proud of my First Global Pacific recording Nightfood. The group is still in existence, although Nightfood is more of a concept rather than a specific band.'
