| Two of the most consistently exciting and inventive talents in jazz--drummer Jack DeJohnette and guitarist Bill Frisell--join forces on this unique and wonderful outing. Those who suspect that an album-length duet between a guitarist and a drummer couldn't be as rich and fully realized as a larger ensemble obviously don't know the work of either artist.
DeJohnette has played with everyone from Miles Davis on, and is still one of the most sophisticated and challenging percussionists on the scene. And Frisell's genre-spanning excursions and otherworldly atmospheres (heightened by a liberal use of effects) must be heard to be believed. This set, recorded live at the Earshot Jazz Festival in 2001, takes the listener through 11 compositions that range from wildly experimental ("Cat and Mouse") to lushly ambient ("Storm Clouds and Mist") while hitting every gorgeous, thrilling point in between. Recommended. |
