This double CD includes all of the studio master takes of Gerry Mulligan’s celebrated sextet, as well as eight additional bonus tracks on CD 2, which consist of different versions of unedited material from the same studio sessions. Mulligan can seldom have played better than in these sextet performances. These items show his advances in regard to tonal variety, rhythm relaxation and piquant melodic invention. Jazz critic Ralph J. Gleason wrote the following in “Down Beat” magazine: “The sextet perhaps may be the initial form for Mulligan to work with. His seminal researches into rhythm devices, evident in the quartet, have been developed to a greater extent here and in a much freer form than with a big-band book. There are times, usually on an interlude toward the end of a number, when he is able to direct the horns into a boiling and bubbling stew which can raise me right off the floor..."
