In 1967, when this Hannover concert was performed, Oscar Peterson was already a well known figure, with an almost twodecade playing career and multiple recordings under his belt. Hawkins and Peterson knew each other well and had performed together on many occasions, beginning with the early Jazz at the Philharmonic concerts organized by Norman Granz in the late Forties. This previously unissued concert in Hannover was taped for a German radio broadcast. It is, in fact, an important addition to their not so prolific discography together, as it constitutes the last known encounter. Hawk’s evocative solo on “September Song” must be noted among the many highlights of the concert, as well as Peterson’s trio version of “Alice in Wonderland”, a tune popularized in the jazz world by Bill Evans. Comparing Oscar and Bill’s approach to this tune on their respective versions can give us a fascinating idea of the stuff that jazz is made of.
