| Double bassist Martel is a Canadian musician living in Montreal and working with musique-actuelle musicians such as Gordon Allen, Antoine Berthiaume, Isaiah Ceccarelli, Philippe Lauzier, Marianne Trudel, Robert Marcel Lepage and Lori Freedman. He's also worked with New York based Balkan free jazz group The Foreigner and the eccentric Rake Star, which the Village Voice describes as "Canadians who look and sound like they just arrived from Saturn". He considers himself a researcher and experimenter, and this release is the result of his work on the prepared solo double bass. Through various attachments and interactions (paper clips, rings, sticks, &c), along with an extremely extended set of finger and bowing techniques. The pieces are recorded without overdubs and make a series of fascinatings interactions, augmented by engineer Ross Murray's multiple miking system, which allows for interesting auditory perspectives. |
