| A slow building set from Duke Ellington and his amazing group of players -- a rare step away from the Orchestra for the King Of Swing -- captured at the Rainbow Grill in NYC's Rockafeller Center during a residency in the summer of 1967!
This great little session was originally broadcast live on radio -- and it starts out with just Duke, rolling loosely in a solo piano setting before the boys take their places for a wonderfully intuitive, delicate mode --one that occasional builds to a tighter sound, then just as often loosens up in a really sweet way! They roll through a few classics, some rarer favorites, all if it with a lighter swing than what's most associated with the Duke. |
