| The supergroup threesome of guitarist John Scofield, keyboardist Larry Goldings and drummer Jack DeJohnette live at the Queen Elizabeth Hall in 2004 - released ahead of this thrilling group's return here next month. The lineup and the programme were inspired originally by the groundbreaking 1970s fusion trio Lifetime, led by the former Miles Davis drummer Tony Williams and originally including John McLaughlin on guitar - but this set draws on wider material from across the jazz of the past 30 years.
Joe Henderson's If is a furious swinger displaying Scofield's tireless invention and DeJohnette's percussion power. Some of the music is musingly Zawinul-like, Allah Be Praised is a briefly jostling rock-blues, Saudades sensuous Milesian funk, and two jazz standards - Seven Steps to Heaven and I Fall In Love Too Easily - bring out Scofield's fluent bebop skills and Goldings's melodic elegance respectively. Coltrane's Big Nick shows how tellingly Goldings uses melodic invention rather than churning Hammond chord cliches, and the Lifetime track Emergency is delivered with a wall-to-wall intensity reminiscent of the original Williams band. - The Guardian |
