|Pianist Mark Koch has been taking part in the Swiss jazz scene for almost thirty years with side-trips to fusion and latin music. In 2004 a big wish came true: he founded the Mark Koch trio together with Peter Fischer (drums) and Samuel Joss (bass). Their first CD "Red, Blue and Green" which will appear at the beginning of May 2006 on the renown Swiss jazz label Brambus Records (Brambus 200612-2), will prove that three full-blooded musicians have met here.
The trio expertly mixes jazz with ambient sound and combines hard bop elements with fusion rhythms. Listening to them we immediately realize: this here is an exchange of three equal individualists who understand each other implicitly and complement each other perfectly. As a result we get a vivid carpet of sound which is based on a straight groove and urges the three musicians on.
The trio's music is comprised of the pianist's originals. Lyrical melodic arches alternate with cascading sound patterns, free improvisations follow complex harmonic sequences. The group aims at leaving the largest possible freedom in playing to each of the musicians without neglecting a dense and independent overall sound.
Mark Koch and Peter Fischer were touring with the legendary funk jazz group "Twice a Week" among others, and Samuel Joss certainly is one of the most distinguished bass players of the Swiss jazz scene who already played with Kenny Wheeler, Clark Terry, John Allred and Percy Sledge.
