This truly amazing concert, issued here on DVD for the first time ever, gives a perfect idea of the impact Art Blakey's Jazz Messengers had on stage. Everything here swings from the first note and the audience's response gives testimony to the group's power. It is also one of the rare opportunities to see Lee Morgan on film (he was only 21 at the time), as he was seldom captured by movie or TV cameras during his short life). It is also interesting to see a young Wayne Shorter during his pre-Miles period. The Jazz Messengers were well-aquainted with Paris prior to this performance at the Theatre des Champs Elysees. In fact, they had cut one of their most famous albums the previous year at the Club Saint Germain. Although all of the tunes have their highlights, the combo's reading of Gillespie's "A Night in Tunisia" is certainly a climax difficult to equal. In addition to the five tunes filmed during the concert, this release contains tow bonus tracks from the same Theatre des Champs Elysees performance, in which only the audio was preserved.
