| 2 unusual albums from the west coast scene of the 50s -- both of them with a key connection to the Lighthouse All-Stars! The CD title is a bit misleading -- as Conte Candoli wasn't actually the leader on either session, and one of the records doesn't feature Max Roach at all -- but the music itself more than makes up for that bit of slight of hand in the naming -- and it's great to have both of these records on CD! The first 8 tracks on the set are from the 1957 album Drummin The Blues -- an odd set that featured drum work by both Stan Levey and Max Roach. Stan and Max are about as unlikely a pair as you could imagine -- both jazz drummers, but one with a cooler, more laidback sound (Levy), the other with a harder, more full-on and bop driven approach (Roach). This set features each drummer alternating track to track -- supporting a core group with Bill Perkins on tenor, Conte Candoli on trumpet, and Frank Rosolino on trombone. Given that such a setting is more Levy's territory than Roach's, he actually fits in a bit more with the sound -- but even on the Roach tracks, the west coast jazz vibe pervades -- so don't expect a super-huge change in the style. Titles include "Breadline Blues", "Facts About Max", "Royal Garden Blues", "The Count's Blues", and "Blues In The Night". The remaining 10 tracks on the set are from a great 1960 album called Jazz Structures -- recorded under the name of the Lighthouse All Stars, but fetauring arrangements and compositions by Bob Cooper -- who was the real driving force behind the set. Conte Candoli's in the group on trumpet -- and other players include Buddy Colette and Bud Shank on alto and flute, Frank Rosolino on trombone, Victor Feldman on vibes and percussion, Stan Levey on drums, and Cooper himself on tenor. The overall sound is relatively tightly constrained, in a "jazz suite" mode -- but there's plenty of room for solo space on the set, and Cooper's writing is as fluid as his ability is strong to bring these players together as conductor. The set's got a really great feel that gets way past some of the more academic west coast work of its sort -- with a lot more soul than you'd expect. Titles include "Rain Blues", "Edifice", "Quittin Time", "Automations", and "Impulse". |
