"Stone Water" was recorded live at the 1999 Festival de Musique de Actuelle Victorille at Quebec, Canada. It was originally intended for a radio boardcast, it was issued into a single track CD with the complete 37 minutes performance uncut and untempered. A double rhythm section, along with multiple horns were presented in this performance: Mats Gustafsson rivals Brotzmann's intensity note for note, Vandermark took a more Evan Parker-like approach. Toshinori Kondo was his usual post-Miles coolness and electronic weirdness. Jeb Bishop and Fred Lonberg-Holm provided back-up when the intensity faltered. Ken Kessler and east coast improv supremo William Parker plucking and bowing away on their basses. Perhaps the most interesting duo must be Michael Zerang and Hamid Drake. Zerang was the steady time keeper (not without some needed looseness that keeps the groove funky), it contrasted nicely with the rich textures that Drake was able to coax from his kit and frame drum. My personal favorite moment must be the part where Drake was winging an African-sounding groove from his frame drums, building up the tension with the crashing crescendo of the whole band joining in for the loud and euphoric finale. Admist these insane energy that the players projected, Brotzmann was able to cut it through with determined and focused energy. His tone is now rounded with more precision. Not a single note is wasted from this Master. The band played in supernatural synchronization with every stop and start cue perfectly. Perhaps there is some loose structure that guided the player through the tune. However, it was the magic and chemistry between the group members and the attitude from within that made this music special and withstood the test of time, 30 years before and after.
