John Cage (1912-1992) is surely one of the most towering figures in 20th century music, as he has not only influenced generations of "classical" composers but composers and performers in jazz, improvisational music and even rock & roll. Cage's views--heavily influenced by Eastern philosophy--about how music should/could come into being and its role in life, and how "silence" is a crucial component in the process-are exemplified beautifully in this collection of some of his earliest and final compositions. 1992's 'Seventy-Four,' scored for "high and low instruments," with its long, sustained motifs and tones, is akin to the minimalism of Steve Reich and Phil Niblock as well as the detailed, repetitive labyrinths of Morton Feldman. 'The Seasons', composed for a 1947 ballet by Merce Cunningham, is strikingly "conventional" by avant guard standards--it has four distinct movements, and the dynamics used to impart the distinctions between seasons recall Stravinsky and Vivaldi. (Cage was also known to like Bach but strongly dislike Beethoven.) The brittle sonorities of the toy piano appealed to Cage, so he wrote for it. The 'Suite For Toy Piano' is charmingly folk-like (both in the American folk-song sense as well as the shimmering sounds of the Indonesian gamelan) in its solo incarnation and robustly and demonstratively symphonic (as in Tchaikovsky and Ives sense) in its orchestrated version. (The latter was orchestrated by a friend and occasional collaborator of Cage's, composer Lou Harrison.) THE SEASONS is both a fine supplement to the large Cage discography as well as a superb introduction for those unfamiliar with his music.
