| Recorded in 1936 and 1937. It's hard to go wrong with a well-selected Robert Johnson collection, and this one is a fine bet. While GENIUS OF THE BLUES excludes alternate takes, it includes a version of each song Johnson laid to tape, including the stone-cold classics "Kindhearted Woman Blues," "Come On In My Kitchen," and "Terraplane Blues."
Robert Johnson’s blues style, performed in an extremely simple manner, perfectly suits the emotion in his lyrics, which are real poems of suggestive imagery while being permeated with the melancholy and angst derived from the crossroads between the rural and the industrial, the old and the new. This CD compiles, for the first time in a single volume, the whole recorded works of Robert Johnson (not counting 12 alternate takes). Since the matter is not entirely clear and a number of these alternate takes have been previously issued as masters in some previous anthologies, I have decided to choose the particular take which offers a better quality of sound, just like I have done in the case of previously unreleased material.
The Definitive Records label was established to release definitive editions from the musical legacy by time-honoured artists most appreciated by generations of aficionados in all musical fields.
As an alternative to the overproduction of boring, fussy "integral" sets, Definitive Records offers a selected, colourful program of good-quality, anthological re-issues which have been compiled according to strict criteria, making sure that the listener will get:
-
Cream-of-the-crop recordings by each artist
-
Digital remastering in 24-bit high resolution
-
Bonus tracks of meaningful value according to context
-
Accurate, to-the-point liner notes
-
Modern packaging and design
An essential collection designed to fight back the saturation of bulky re-issues currently affecting the recording business. |
