| Tremendous large group material from Art Farmer -- 2 rare United Artists albums back to back on one CD! First up is Brass Shout -- a record that we passed up for years because we were afraid of the words "brass" and "shout" in the title -- but then found out was a killer! If you're a Farmer fan, don't worry about this being some sort of snoozy bold n brassy session -- because it's a much more subtle record, and features some excellent lead solos by Art, set amidst a larger group that includes Lee Morgan, Curtis Fuller, Jimmy Heath, and Philly Joe Jones. Benny Golson handled the arrangements, so you can imagine the kind of sensitive treatment of the material -- especially if you know Golson's rich talent for putting together arrangements that never get sleepy. Titles include "Minor Vamp", "Nica's Dream", "Stella By Starlight", and "Five Spot After Dark". Aztec Suite continues the larger group mode -- but with even more dynamic results! Side one of the album features the extended "Aztec Suite" -- written and arranged by Chico O'Farrill with a really Latin finish -- and blown mostly by Farmer over orchestrations conducted by Al Cohn. Cohn's at the helm again on side two, where Art's the main soloist on a series of orchestral tunes -- all still done with lots of Latin touches, making for a really unique sound for Farmer! Titles include "Aztec Suite", "Heat Wave", "Drume Negrita", and "Delirio". |
