Glancing Backwards: The Dawn Anthology

| A key figure on the British free jazz scene over forty years, saxophonist John Surman recorded with such rock-oriented performers as Alexis Korner and The Nice in the late 1960s before forming jazz outfit The Trio in 1969 with the aid of exiled Americans Barre Phillips (bass) and Stu Martin (drums). This comprehensive 3-CD anthology assembles Surman’s fascinating, highly acclaimed body of work for the Dawn label: two albums (the first a double) with The Trio, his spellbinding collaboration with guitarist John McLaughlin, Where Fortune Smiles, and a subsequent reunion album with Stu Martin that, appropriately enough, turned out to be the last recording issued by Dawn before the label’s collapse in early 1976. Previously released on 4 LPs including The Trio, Conflagration, Where Fortune Smiles and Live at Woodstock Town Hall. |
ARTISTS John Surman plus John McLaughlin, Karl Berger, Stu Martin and Dave Holland. |
