| A fantastic album by Betty Carter -- and certainly her rarest -- not nearly as "out there" as you might guess from the title, but still a sparkling set of modern jazz vocals! The album was recorded with arrangements by Gigi Gryce, plus some help from Melba Liston -- and a all-hip cast of players that includes Kenny Dorham, Sam Jones, Sahib Shihab, Benny Golson, and Wynton Kelly -- all coming together in small group formation and swinging along magically with the Betty Carter groove. Betty's voice is in fantastic form -- way more swinging and free than on some of her earlier sides, in a way that points the direction towards some of the groundbreaking work she'd do on her own label two decades later! Titles include "All I've Got", "Make It Last", "Foul Play", "Babe's Blues", and "You're Driving Me Crazy". |
