This classic disc was recorded live at the Vidy Theatre in Lausanne, Switzerland in April of 2006. Sylvie Couvoisier never ceases to astonish me as a completely singular pianist and composer. Her playing both inside and on the piano keyboard sets her apart as she sounds like no else. Since moving to New York in the past decade, she has become an integral part of the creative scene which revolves around The Stone and Tonic and involves a few dozen musicians like John Zorn, Susie Ibarra, Mark Feldman (her husband & most frequent collaborator), Erik Friedlander, Tim Berne, Ikue Mori and others. Sylvie's duo with Mark Feldman is extraordinary whether improvising or playing Masada songs. For her new quintet disc, 'Lonelyville', Sylvie has put together a fine quintet that features three of downtown's best with French cellist, Vincent Courtois, who we know from his work with Louis Sclavis. This discs consists of three long pieces and a shorter title track. "Texturologie" begins sparse and is superbly recorded. The piece unfolds slowly with each nuance of sound delicately placed. There is a short, violent section about five minutes in, which soon settles back to the haunting spare sound with some excellent cello and violin taking short, precious solo in between the other intense eruptions. Sylvie and Gerald play a great, tight well-crafted piano and drums duo that is shows how well-matched they are, eventually adding Ikue's focused electronics to the duo. The balance between the sparse and intense eruptions is just right. "Cosmorama" is a wonderful, well-written work that balances more crafty charted sections with some great improvised moments. Both the violin and cello play those charted parts with immense creativity and with stunning results. On "Contraste 2005", there is sublime balance of textures, the electronics, percussion and inside-the-piano explorations are utterly fascinating to behold, especially since it is difficult to tell them apart. I love the way the strings carefully weave their way amongst the other magical sounds. The written parts add some more haunting melodic ingredients. This disc is rich in detail and sounds best with no other distractions to take away its unique blend.
