Gabriel Prokofiev’s Nonclassical imprint returns for another daring voyage into the world of modern classical and electronics. They’re certainly not the first to approach this, over the past few years there has been no shortage of artists willing to blend the world of classical music with the world of modern electronica; Max Richter, Ryan Teague, Johann Johannsson, Marsen Jules and Greg Haines to name just a few, however here Prokefiev has enlisted a quite sprawling group of collaborators to aid him in his quest. The intial piece ‘Suite for Piano and Electronics’ is from composer John Richards and performed by pianist GéNIA – this blends a Satie-like piano-led melancholy with chilly electronic experiments maybe best compared with the BBC Radiophonic Workshop or similarly innovative analogue fetishists. However it is in the remixes that this piece really shows the power it has and the remixers appear to delight in picking it to pieces and rebuilding it once more. Highlights come from dubstep pioneers Vex’d (proving that they don’t have to be doing bass and beats to muster up something truly menacing; their contribution is a gloomy chunk of washy ambience), Max De Wardener, Kreepa (who drop a piece which sounds something like Alva Noto jamming with Wolf Eyes) and Derailer, the collaborative project of Ninja Tune’s John Matthias, David and Andy Prior (who manage to rewire the original into something reminiscent of Akira Rabelais or even William Basinski), but to be honest the whole disc works surprisingly well. Of course there are missteps, as is to be expected when trying something this brave, but they can easily be overlooked when the quality of much of the disc is so high. Modern classical fans need look no further, it’s nice to know that some people aren’t afraid to mix things up a little bit! Recommended.
