Hard to believe that it's taken around 30 years for British percussionist Eddie Prévost to record a solo album. But 'Loci of Change', appropriately subtitled 'Sound and Sensibility', has been well worth the wait, and is certain to captivate those souls already enthralled by the recent solo outings of Pierre Favre, Le Quan Ninh and Gino Robair. Prevost's improv sensibility, with AMM especially, is legendary, and of course all the more apparent on 'Loci' where his playing radiates an unhurried, contemplative authority. Like Varèse, who understood percussion both as a means of creating new soundworld and evoking a sense of mankind's 'cosmic roots' (a phrase nearly stripped of all sensible meaning by the late 60s comsumerist psychedelic culture), Prévost create rich, multilayered soundscapes (without overdubbing) which are distinctly modern, yet tap (pun intended) into something promordial and mysterious. Not surprising really, considering the importance of percussion in sacred rituals of numerous ancient religions. His use of gongs and cymbals (presumably set in sustained motion by motorised beaters) effectively suggest shimmering, spatial depth and expanse, wheras bowing and plucking strings on a barrel drum generate darker, earthier colours and textures. Close listening will reveal a host of glowing resonances hovering nimbus-like abpove the more strident gestures. Hopefully Eddie won't keep us wating another 30 years before his next wondrous solo recording.
