| 1965 was a busy year in Bill Evans' career, beginning
with a New York studio session on February 3, accompanied
by Israels and Bunker. The session was issued as Trio
65. The trio then began a European tour where they were
recorded in Paris on February 13. This is the concert
included on the current release, which was taken from a
radio broadcast. As a bonus, we have added a rare radio broadcast from
New York's Birdland, which also features Chuck Israels on
bass, but with Paul Motian on drums. The announcer is
Sidney "Symphony Sid" Torin, whose voice and pet phrases
are well-known by jazz fans. Torin presented many live
broadcasts from Birdland, the Royal Roost, the Hi Hat and
other venues, which were fortunately saved for posterity
by the likes of Boris Rose and a few more aficionados, who
were eagerly waiting at home with their recording machines,
ready to capture the broadcasts' every note. That's probably
how these three tunes were preserved. Maison de l’ORTF, Paris, France, February 13, 1965. |
