The meeting between The Thing and Cato Salsa Experience started at the Kongsberg Jazzfestival in Norway in 2004, when The Thing was offered the chance to invite their favorite rock band Cato Salsa Experience, for a special collaboration. The show was a success and this also led to the critically acclaimed EP “Sounds Like A Sandwich” on Smalltown Superjazzz. It was immediately decided that the two bands and the legend should go into studio to record a fullenght album. The result is the self titled album “Two Bands And A Legend”. On the album the bands do their own versions of tracks like “Who The Fuck” by PJ Harvey, “Baby Talk” by James Blood Ulmer among others. The CD is the perfect pairing of the dirty 60s influenced free-jazz that of The Thing and the raw and minimalistic garage rock of Cato Salsa Experience. Most tracks on this album was recorded in one take only with no overdubs.

Review:
This latest release on Smalltown Superjazz combines some of the Nordic jazz scene’s leading lights, such as sax maestro Mats Gustafsson and free jazz drumming icon Paal Nilssen-Love. The two groups involved in these recordings first met up at the Kongsberg Jazz Festival in 2004, where jazz trio The Thing invited their favourite rock combo, Cato Salsa Experience to combine efforts. The fruits of this mighty collaboration result in a crossing over of styles: The Thing become a garage band whilst Cato & co. are encouraged to venture into the outer limits of free improv lunacy. As is customary with The Thing-related project, the bulk of the work here is taken up by cover versions of ‘Louie Louie’ (which sounds so awesome) and tracks by James Blood Ulmer, The Sonics, The Cramps and PJ Harvey, whose monstrous ‘Who The F**k’ is given an awesome outing here. As a bonus, the album comes with suitably far-out liner notes by Thurston Moore. Superb.
