In 2004 the pianist/composer Søren Kjærgaard was awarded the Danish National Radio Jazz Award for his "originality and creative presence on the Copenhagen and Danish jazz scene, being one the pioneers in the creative wave of the young generation". The award included features on radio broadcasts and studio time in the National Radio. In his preparations for the recording, Kjærgaard went into the Radiohouse basement, where he found an arsenal of old keyboard instruments. The frame of the album was set.
”Keys” is a creative play with acoustic keyboards. A solo study in the sounds of the piano, and experiments with the celeste, cembalo, glocken spiel, pump organ. We hear SK dig deep in his interpretations of jazz standards along with original piano compositions, music box nostalgia and film music atmospheres, piano strings processed to oblivion and the blues on a cembalo. ”Keys” is a double album which respectfully looks back and curiously ahead. |
