This is an unusual duo which features a few original pieces, but mostly traditional songs from France, Ireland and England, plus a couple of poems by W. B. Yeats and Thomas Moore. Greetje is an extraordinary vocalist who sounds like no one else. She's worked with David Moss, Marilyn Crispell, Mark Dresser and modern composer Louis Andriessen, The three original pieces by the duo show the further out side of this duo, creating strange sounds for the voice and harmonium. The duo cover Gustav Holst's music with lyrics by Christina Rossetti. It is a prayer-like work, dealing with the story of Jesus Christ. They also cover a French Christmas song from the middle-ages, another solemn, poignant piece. Klaas' harmonium often sounds much like a majestic church organ. There is also a lovely Welsh "Lullaby" from the 19th century and a traditional British folk song from the same century. Commencing with another lullaby for an unborn child, a sad, affecting piece and a final Christmas song, sung in the Occitan language of southern France. More ancient sadness, reaching back from previous centuries. Not what I would have expected from the often more bizarre vocal stylings of Greetje Bijma. - BLG

Recorded 2005.
